Ernest Hemingway (1889 - 1961)

 

Ernest Hemingway, from the US state of Illinois, became famous for his short stories and books, including For Whom The Bell Tolls (Wem die Stunde schlägt). Ernest started writing for a newspaper when he was 17. He came to Europe during the First World War. He married four times and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954.

On July 2, 1961, author Ernest Hemingway died in Idaho after shooting himself. Hemingway's novels, most of which had themes of adventure and mortality, were of great emotional power. The author received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954 "for his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style."
