Lost in Translation

 

Bob (Bill Murray), an American film actor who has arrived in Tokyo to film whisky commercials, meets Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), the young wife of a visiting photographer. Bored with their lives and confused by Japanese cultural and language differences, the two begin one of cinema's funniest and most melancholy relationships.

 

Sofia Coppola is the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola and a cousin of Nicolas Cage. Although she is only 35, she is already a respected director. She grew up on film sets and worked as an actress, producer, writer and costume designer. Sofia Coppola's second movie as a director, The Virgin Suicides (1999), was nominated for nine awards. Lost in Translation won her the Oscar for best original screenplay and was nominated for three others, including those for best director and best film.
