The Normans in control

 

William believed that the whole of England belonged to him. He gave the land that he had taken from the English noblemen to the men from Normandy who had fought with him at Hastings. Norman castles were built all over the country. William gave all the important jobs in the government and the Church to the Normans. Then he ordered a huge survey of the land that he had conquered. An Anglo-Saxon monk of the time wrote: “The king sent his men over all England into every county to find out how much land there was and how much tax should be paid from each county. This was done so carefully that there was not a single ox, cow or pig that was left out.“
