Prime Minister Churchill

Chamberlain had considered occupying Norway before Hitler to cut off Germany's iron ore supplies, but he hesitated. Churchill recommended going ahead with the plan, but Chamberlain was worried about world opinion if Britain did attack a neutral country like Norway. Hitler seized his chance. Chamberlain had miscalculated. His rather weak leadership was not popular with the public. Churchill, on the other hand, had plenty of fighting spirit. He had been an opponent of Hitler long before the war and had urged Britain to build up her armed forces. In May 1940 Parliament voted Churchill in as Prime Minister.
