British history VIII
Neolithic and Bronze Ages
Agriculture and the wheel c. 1400 BC
The invention of the wheel during the Bronze Age revolutionised transport, as horses and oxen could now be driven, and larger masses moved. The ox-drawn plough also transformed agricultural productivity. The area of land cultivated could be greatly increased, and field systems were developed. A wider variety of crops began to be grown, including emmer, spelt, bread wheat, oats, barley, pears and flax. In the latter part of this period, there is evidence that sheep and cattle farming became increasingly regular in the north of England.
