Neolithic and Bronze Ages

Technology before metals c. 2300 BC

Neolithic hunters developed technology from the resources available to them. One of the main sources of materials was the remains of animals that had been killed primarily for meat. These provided fur and skins for clothing (skin could also be used for containers, especially for carrying water).

Skin and bone were also used for the making of tools and weapons. Other materials included wood, reeds and grass, clay and stone. Archaeological evidence suggests that flint was being mined in East Anglia, Sussex and other locations before c. 3000 BC and the Neolithic settlement of Skara Brae in the Orkney Isles shows a highly developed culture which relied heavily on stone for all the necessary implements of everyday living.
