Das Verb have to

The verb have to

 

Viel häufiger als must ist das gleichbedeutende have to (3. Person Singular: has to).

 

    I must get up now.

    I have to get up now.

 

    You needn´t get up now.

    You don´t have to get up now.

 

Verneinte Aussagesätze, Fragen und Kurzantworten werden mit Hilfe von do/does/did gebildet.

 

    You don´t have to help me now.

    Sally doesn´t have to do her homework this evening.

    Do you have to leave now?  -  Yes, I do. / No, I don´t.

    Did they have to be at the party so early?  -  Yes, they did. / No, they didn´t.

 

Während must nur im present benutzt werden kann, wird have to auch in anderen Zeiten verwendet.

 

    Sorry I´m late. I had to do some shopping.  -  That´s OK. I didn´t have to wait long.

    Did she have to stay after school?  -  Yes, she did. / No, she didn´t.
