British champions
In motor racing, Britain has had seven World Champion drivers. Successful British racing drivers include Eddie Irvine, David Coulthard and Damon Hill. There are also famous British racing car designers.
Athletics is a very popular spectator sport in Britain. Sally Gunnell won races in the European, Commonwealth, World and Olympic 400-metre hurdles.
Chris Boardman won a gold medal for cycling at the 1992 Olympics, then became a professional road racer. Graeme Obree broke the world record in 1993 by riding 52.27 kilometres in one hour.
