The Beatles

Something big began on October 5th 1962. It all started with the Beatles' first single 'Love me do'.

Teenagers all over the world listened to their music. They bought millions of records and the four musicians earned billions of dollars. Where did they come from?

Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr were all born in Liverpool, a big city in the north-west of England. There they went to school, met in clubs and listened to rock'n roll. Later on they decided to play their own rock'n roll music.

As it was hard to get jobs as musicians in Liverpool they started their career in Hamburg. There they played in different clubs. They returned to Liverpool in 1962. In less than two years they became the most famous pop group.

The Beatles stayed together till 1970 then they split up and each of them tried a solo career. The most successful were Paul and John but not for a long time.

A year later John moved to the USA. On December 8th 1980 a man called Mark David Chapman waited for him in front of his house in New York. When John arrived after a hard day at the studios Chapman only asked, 'Mr John Lennon?' and shot him dead. Although that happened more than sixteen years ago the Beatles and their music are really a legend which will never die.
