In the Land of the Bears
Last summer Susan Schmidt, a German photographer went to a national park in Alaska to take photos for a report on bears. At the Visitors' Center the ranger told her the park rules:
Stay overnight at campsites or hotels only!
Don't feed the animals!
Do not leave the roads or paths!
Bears can be everywhere! Do not go near a bear! If you see one, make noise, clap your hands but never run away. Do not leave any food outside your tent.
Susan went to a campsite. She was happy to be in the national park and she liked the beautiful evening and enjoyed the forest, grass and interesting plants. She forgot all about bears.
She put up her tent and soon fell asleep. Early in the morning a strange noise woke her up. She thought, "Who is cutting down trees at four o'clock in the morning?" Her tent moved and she heard something funny. It sounded like a pig: She looked through her tent window and what did she see? Two bears!
First she was shocked, then she remembered the rules. Make noise! Clap your hands! She did it and slowly the two bears went into the forest. Wow! Susan was very happy that she and the bears had known what to do.
She quickly took out her camera to take a snapshot but the bears had already disappeared in the forest.
