The Bottle
In 1979 Susan and John Peckham from Los Angeles went to Hawaii on *vacation. They traveled by ship. Like many other people on the ship, Susan threw a bottle into the ocean. She had put a piece of paper in it with her name and address and a message: "If you find this bottle, write to us!" Three years later and 9000 miles away a man named Hoa van Nguyen and his family were on a boat, too. They were not on vacation but **refugees on their way from Vietnam to Thailand. They had to leave their country because of the war there.
Soon there wasnt't any drinking water in the boat but Hoa was thirsty. Suddenly he saw a bottle in the sea, he fished it out and opened it. But there was only a piece of paper in it: Mrs Peckham's address!
When Hoa and his family arrived at the refugee camp in Thailand, he wrote a letter to Mrs Peckham. She was very excited and answered his letter immediately. For some time they wrote back and forth!
Finally Hoa asked, "Could you help us to come to the USA, please?"
So the Peckhams sent them enough money for the flight and in 1985 the Vietnamese family arrived in Los Angeles. There the Peckhams warmly welcomed them and they became friends.
