Elizabeth Eckford's First Day at a New School
Can you believe that Blacks in the USA had their own schools before 1954? In 1954 a new law allowed them to attend 'white' schools! But many Whites and even some politicians in the South were against that law.
On September 4, 1957 it was Elizabeth's first day at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. She was one of the first nine black students there. Walking towards the school she saw a large crowd of Whites in front of it and she heard all the angry voices calling her bad names because she was black. She felt nervous and she was glad when she reached the school entrance.
She tried to get in - but two guards at the door didn't let her pass.
Only Whites were allowed to enter!
Elizabeth had no chance to start at her new school that day. She turned round and walked to the bus stop. "Lynch her! Lynch her!" the people shouted. At the bus stop a very kind white lady got on the bus with Elizabeth, sat next to her and tried to cheer her up. Elizabeth left the bus in front of the building where her mother worked. She ran upstairs to her office right into her arms and cried.
Three weeks later the black students were able to attend their Highschool because President Eisenhower had sent troops to guarantee the visit of all schools for Blacks, too.
