New York - City of Stars, City of Culture

People call it the capital of the world. It has thousands of great stores, restaurants, fun things to do and over eight million people from more than 180 countries. You can feel the energy the moment you arrive. The city is New York and it's got five boroughs: Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.

Even if you haven't visited New York, you may feel like you know it. The huge number of films made here, and TV series like Sex and the City, have given people everywhere an idea of what "the city that never sleeps" is like.

New York has been a center of international entertainment for years. It's the home of the four biggest US television networks. It's the city that people go to if they want to become famous and where they stay when they do. You often see stars like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen or Leonardo DiCaprio on the street.

One famous actor who was born in New York is Robert De Niro. He has a strong New York accent and has been in classic New York films like Taxi Driver, A Bronx Tale and GoodFellas. He still lives here, owns the well-known restaurant Tribeca Grill (at 375 Greenwich Street) and helps organize the Tribeca Film Festival. Another New Yorker who is very famous for his films about life in New York is Woody Allen. He's been a successful screenwriter, director and producer for over 30 years.

New York is also where hip-hop music was born. Young people started experimenting with hip hop in the Bronx in the 1970s. Since then New Yorkers like Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Jay-Z, 50 Cent and Christina Aguilera have used hip hop to become international superstars.
